Podcasting: Just What Is It
Wayne, NJ - Right now, the flavor of the month appears to be Podcasting.
Though the word may appear to be strange and confusing upon first glance, it is not intimidating at all. In simple terms, podcasting is audio and/or video content sent out over an RSS feed or available as a downloadable file over the internet.
The podcast name is misleading though, as some believe that you must have an iPod to use it, which is not the case. One need only a personal computer or laptop to access podcasts. The podcast can also be transferred to a portable player, such as an iPod or any standard player, for playback. This allows users to be truly mobile after accessing and downloading the file.
The Process Of Podcasting
Computer files in multimedia format are downloaded to a server whereby the end user can then download them in a matter of seconds from the server onto their own system. The user can see the video file and have sound at the same time.
Download speeds can be frustratingly slow for users without sufficient bandwidth to view them. DSL or cable modem internet connection is a necessity for home users with any intentions of downloading a video podcast. A simple dial up connection will not provide adequate access to the podcast medium. Software installation can also help speed up computers lagging in speed. Many times, the distributor of a podcast will provide access to the appropriate software.
The whole podcasting process is still fairly new, gaining true popularity in 2000. Technology allowed it to be utilized by multiple components as early as 2001. However, it wasn’t until 2003 that podcasting truly became the rage of many everyday websites. It seemed like everyone was popping up with their own podcast radio show.
In the span of only a few short years, the podcast has become one of the most popular tools on the internet in regards to viewing information in audio and video form. Initially intended to allow individuals to host their own radio shows, podcasts are now being used in several other areas. Home work and school lessons are very popular uses of podcasts. Audio tours of museums, business meetings and conferences, and public safety messages are all using the podcast to get their information to the public.
New Uses For The Podcast
It's now possible to meet that special someone via a podcast as online dating sites jump on the bandwagon and embrace the technology. Now, rather than just having an online profile with a picture and a few lines about the person, they now can show a podcast and give potential dates a more interesting look at who they are.
What a way to meet Mr. or Mrs. right.
